Methodology

The BI Verdict's Factbases contain a set of criteria for analyzing BI products. We use these criteria to evaluate BI products based on our experience and the tests we have carried out on the products.

These functional and technical criteria provide a well-founded basis for evaluating a software package, and you can use the factbase as a basis for your own customized analysis of how well the product is suited to your needs.

There are four types of criteria:

Components
A description of the components of the tool. The components are not evaluated.

System architecture and administration
A description and evaluation of the product's architecture and administration tools.

Front-ends
A detailed functional description and evaluation of three application classes, standard reporting, ad hoc reporting and analysis.

Applications
This includes descriptions of the additional features BI products sometimes have, including planning and development features.

For the criteria except the components, there is a score for each sub category. The scale is from 0 to 10, 0 for unsupported, and 10 for very well supported. Categories not covered by the product are grayed out. You can use our scores with your own weighting factors to generate a customized profile.

These factbases provide a good deal of detail. The user can drill into and out of the details using Excel's grouping commands. Scoring is not provided for every single detail: the score column is marked yellow where we provide a score, and light green for items we do not score.
